Perry was the daughter of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as as seen through flashback), her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first TV roles. The parents of her did not want her to pursue acting until she became an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry claimed that she was too timid to perform at the age of 16, but she began performing in theater classes at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring to the university from Boston University. Perry following her graduation from Boston University, moved in New York in search of acting roles on television. She landed small parts in shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, homesickness led her to California in search of theater jobs. Perry performed with her mom on stage in The Other Place at Broadway at the end of 2013. In 2015 she performed alongside her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry played a lead role in nine episodes in 2016 of ABC's show The Family. She had a regular role in the ABC political drama Scandal which starred her father. In the same year, she was cast as a young version of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again portraying a younger model of the mother's character. The character was assigned an audition to the actress, regardless of the fact that she has a family tie to the character.
